He was also ordained in 1936. In addition to his studies, young Thomas Regis Murphy was presented in concert at Carnegie Hall as soprano soloist at 12 years old — quite a feat for such a young lad. He played the violin with the Duquesne University Symphony Orchestra for eight years as a student in its prep school and throughout his university years. His versatility extended to winning numerous prizes in oratory and writing. His singing continued during World War I. He also sang on KDKA radio. He composed a number of popular songs played by local orchestras. He derived many pleasant memories from his musical career. Ordained June 14, 1936, at St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Father Murphy’s first assignment was assistant at St. Canice in Knoxville where he served from 1936 to 1951. His second pastorate was at Resurrection Church in West Mifflin, where he served from 1961 until his retirement in 1989, for a total of 34 years as a pastor. His friends and former parishioners will attest to his devotion to Holy Mother Church, his availability to administer the Sacraments, instruct the faithful and guide his flock on the journey to Eternal Life. Even though he was so busy, he found time to pursue additional interests. He wrote two best-selling books on preaching and prayers and his poetry was published in America magazine. (Caldwell) for 55 years; loving and caring father of Raymond (Lori) Buckman III, Cindy (Larry) Roberts, Gregory (Tricia) Buckman and Michael (Nancy) Buckman; loving “Grandpa Bill” to 12 grandchildren and 1 great- grandchild; brother of Harriet Eads. Bill also had a very distinguished professional career. His career began with Bell Aircraft. After several years he joined Westinghouse. He worked on a proposal to NASA for a nuclear rocket that was to be used to explore the outer planets Westinghouse won that contract and Bill was one of the first employees of a new division formed to build the NERVA reactors Eleven were built and tested in Nevada. This project was a magnificent technical achievement. After the NERVA project Bill’s Materials Department worked on energy related projects including wind turbines, fuel cells and solar. Above and beyond these projects, Bill’s continuing focus was on refractory metals. The group he managed invented alloys still in use today. If they didn’t invent the alloys, they characterized them so that others could use them. A recurring theme in Bill’s work was to define the way alloys could be successfully used. A friend of Bill’s managed a laboratory at Wright Patterson Airfield Base, which was and still is devoted to metals development for the Air Force. After leaving Westinghouse after some 30 years of service, Bill formed a consulting company, Refractory Metals Technologies, and continued working on bringing practical solutions to materials challenges. Bill’s name is on a final project for a patent for a new type of medical stent. Shortly before he passed he said “my career has gone from outer space to inner space.” The facility that Bill created at Westinghouse’s Large plant still functions as a materials business. As a small tribute to Bill, the library will be known as the Bill Buckman Library. It is fitting that Bill’s work will be available to today’s metallurgists who are looking for solutions. In addition, Bill was a member of the Lion’s Club, Pleasant Hills Civil Service Commission, and an active member of the Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be on Monday 6-8pm and Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8pm at the JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Rd., Pleasant Hills.
