The Pennsylvania Lions’ Beacon Lodge Camp is a beautiful five hundred and eighty-three acre camp for children and adults with special needs including blindness, deafness, and many other physical and mental challenges. It is nestled in the natural woodlands along the Juniata River of Central Pennsylvania just two miles west of Newton Hamilton, near Mount Union. Beacon Lodge was established in 1948 as a summer camp for blind residents of Pennsylvania. It has grown into a favorite retreat for many people with disabilities as well as a conference center for special groups, an educational facility for families, a rental camp for group retreats, and more. The goals of the camp were and are to present a well-rounded program adaptable to all campers and others, regardless of age, race, creed or color. To learn more visit website.
District 14 B Lions have supported the camp since its inception. Our district has its own dormitory building at the camp and recently has updated it and its complete with ADA equipment. Clubs are encouraged to belong to the “500 Club” (formerly known as the 365 Club) and donate a minimum of $5.00 for each member in its club.
Currently the camp is renovating its water and sewage systems and is a costly endeavor. Clubs again are asked to donate in the “brick program” or to make a donation to the upgrades. The camp is a recognized 501 3(C) corporation and all donations are tax deductible.
District Beacon Lodge Liaison Chair is Lion Tom Hurrell of the Jefferson Hills Lions club. Lion Tom will gladly visit your club to give a presentation about the camp. He can be contacted by calling (412) 466-6358. Call him today to arrange a meeting with your club!
