“A BEACON OF HOPE” is the theme of our International President Sid. L. Scruggs, III is just what District 14-B does each and every year. Our clubs provide “Service” to many communities and hope to hundreds of residents who turn to us in need. To show the strength of our worldwide network and to shine our light even brighter, Lions have the opportunity to participate is four special service action campaigns:

July – September	Engaging our Youth

October – November	Sharing the Vision

December – January	Relieving the Hunger

February – April	Protecting the Planet

Membership is very important to our District. We must grow our membership to continue our service to our communities. My goal is to get our membership to 1,000 which is my benchmark. To get started re-building and re-vitalizing our district requires unbelievable effort, strength and determination which I am committed to, and which I know you understand and will embrace. Every club will receive a visit from me. In addition the 1st and 2nd VDGs and Zone Chairs will visit one additional time.

Leadership, Communication and recognition will be our pat to success. I wish all of you the very best Lions year ever to be “A BEACON OF HOPE.”

“Yes We Will”

Lion Mary Jane Keller, D.G.

Tired of those same old dinner meetings? Why not have an interesting speaker for that dinner meeting?

One suggestion is to have one of the Cabinet Chairs speak to your club on the topic of what they chair (we know that many of your Lions would be interested).

Here are some others (not Lions but great presentations). Their information is listed below. If any club has had an interesting speaker please forward information to PDG Jim Hartman hartmanjw@comcast.net and it will be posted here.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board offers a Speaker’s Bureau for organizations with audiences of 25 or more. Many organizations have already taken advantage of this service and welcomed a member of the PGCB’s board or staff to discuss various topics related to legalized gaming in the Commonwealth.

We would be happy to do the same for your Lions Club.

In its fourth year of existence, the Commonwealth’s casinos have produced significant dividends, especially during this down economy. The Commonwealth’s nine operating casinos have created more than 12,000 living wage jobs and is returning over $3.5 million a day in tax revenue which, among other dividends, has funded the first reductions in homeowners’ property taxes in Pennsylvania’s history.

I know Lions Clubs are always in search of speakers, and if you are interested in someone from our organization addressing your club or a joint meeting of clubs, go to this link for more information and to make an online request. We do ask that the request be made at least 30 days prior to a date when you would like a speaker.

We are flexible and modify presentations according to each group’s interests. Some areas of interest related to the work of TPF in the community include the following:

TPF is providing a new philanthropic service for our broad regional community with the introduction of a special web-based directory of nonprofit organizations called PittsburghGives. Through PittsburghGives, nonprofits are invited to complete a detailed profile on their organizations, enabling them to present their missions and cases for funding support, while providing donors with extensive information and non-profit accountability at their fingertips.

We can discuss recent initiatives TPF has undertaken to strengthen the region, including the Neighbor-Aid Fund. This current distribution fund serves as a flexible resource to support nonprofit organizations struggling to meet escalating demands from families and individuals as a result of the economic downturn. Grants from the Fund are awarded by a distribution/advisory committee, comprised of representatives from all major funding organizations. The Committee awards assistance grants to meet increased demands by individuals and families on nonprofits that it determines to have the capacity to provide support in housing, utilities, food, and transportation.

The Pittsburgh Promise is a visionary scholarship program to help students graduating from the Pittsburgh Public Schools to pursue further education after high school, and to enhance the growth, stability, and economic development of the Pittsburgh Region. I can provide an update on the program, which has received much media attention since its launch in 2007 with a $100 million commitment by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC.)

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like additional information. If any Lions Club members are interested in scheduling a presentation, please contact Kristen DeAngelis at (412) 394-2606 or by EMAIL ~~~~ VISIT THEIR WEBSITE

At the annual Steak Fry on Tuesday, August 3, Dan talked about the thrill of his more than 300 parachute jumps that began at age 16, and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. But what tops those thrills, he said, was his biggest accomplishment—getting a job.

Dan has a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and is employed by CMU as the Oracle Database Administrator. In 2006, he married Teresa Brosenitsch, a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh. The couple live in Squirrel Hill and have one daughter, Sofia Grace, who was born November 27th 2009.

Unless they want to be airplane pilots or bus drivers, people with vision impairments can do just about anything that sighted people do, they just find different ways to accomplish the tasks, he said.

“The largest issue any blind person will have to deal with is the sighted person who tells him that he can’t do something,” Dan said.

Dan thanked the Lions for their commitment to supporting agencies such as BVRS, and for their work on behalf of people with vision loss. Dan lost his vision to cancer as a child. A few years after that happened, a Lions Club on Long Island, NY where he lived, gave him a talking calculator that Dan said opened the world of possibilities to him.

After his presentation, the Bethel Park Lions Club made a generous donation to BVRS.

As outlined in the International & Multiple District Constitution and By Laws, the Council of Governors has the authority to call for a Special Convention of the Multiple District. The Special Convention must be called for a special reason.

The 2009-10 State Council has voted to call for a Special to be convened for the purpose of endorsing a candidate for the office of 2nd Vice President of Lions Clubs International.

It has been 28 years since our Multiple District 14 has had the opportunity to present a Lion to be elected as a 2nd Vice President of Lions Clubs International. The process will begin by endorsing Lion Harold “Otter” Ott, PID at the Special Convention to be conducted in each Sub-district the week of August 9th to August 15th.

The Special Convention is a very simple process. All Lions in our district are asked to send a full complement of delegates from each Lions Club to vote at the Special Convention. Each Past District Governor also has a vote over and above the Lions Club compliment of delegates. Each Lions Club secretary and Past District Governor will receive their delegate cards from the State Office. There will be no meetings or speeches. Each Lion delegate attending the Special Convention will register, be certified and vote to endorse our proposed candidate.

This District Special Convention will be conducted on Saturday, August 14, 2010 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Homeville Fire Hall, 3900 Greensprings Ave., West Mifflin. Google a Map by CLICKING HERE
